Tell us about your background (how long at KPMG, previous roles, etc)
I recieved an offer to join KPMG in the summer of 2014. At the time my wife and I were discussing what to do regarding her return to work from maternity leave following the birth of our first child. She was keen to return to her career and while we knew our son would need to go into childcare during a part of the week, we wanted to balance this with our time with him. One of the benefits listed in my offer from KPMG was flexible working, so I spoke to my recruiter to ask if I could take the position on a four day week.
What is the best thing about working for KPMG?
I was delighted that KPMG accepted my request and started in October 2014 working Monday to Thursday. In forensic Risk & Regulation, I’ve worked with a range of clients since I started, predominantly in the energy sector. My flexible working arrangement has been well received by clients and a number have commented that it reflects well on KPMG – it can involve some additional planning and management of expectations, but I have always managed to find a position which works for both sides.
What challenges have you faced in your role? How did you overcome these?
The most challenging area for me has been proposal submission – frequently a client RFP will have a submission deadline at the end of the week meaning my involvement largely ends on Thursday. We have overcome this through again careful planning, allocation of responsibilities and using available time efficiently.
What would be your advice to anyone considering working more flexibly/part-time?
I had always worked a full five day week, but after becoming a father, flexible working has allowed me to enjoy the rewards of a young family while committing myself to my new career with KPMG across the remaining four days.
