I have worked flexibly over the last 10 years as a sibling carer and now as a mother. After having my daughter in 2011, I decided to work in contract roles thinking that this was the only way I could achieve the flexibility that I needed.

In 2015, I realised that performing a series of contract roles meant that I really missed building long lasting relationships with team members and the businesses that I supported. I decided to look for a permanent role within a company that was results driven and therefore less likely to be opposed to agile ways of working.

I found a vacancy for a HR Manager position at Capgemini and this instantly grabbed my attention, as I was already aware of Capgemini’s reputation for treating its employees’ well. I applied for the role and I was contacted by a member of the Capgemini recruitment team who was incredibly professional and asked me questions specifically related to the role requirements.

During the interview process, I was transparent about the flexibility that I needed. In summary, I proposed that I could work my contractual hours in a different way and still do a great job.

Capgemini offered me the HR Manager position, I accepted and I have not looked back since. When I am at work I am able to focus and be at my best, knowing that my most precious is happy and that I am there for her when she needs me.

This year, I celebrated my twelfth anniversary at Capgemini.

During my time here, I’ve progressed from Relationship Manager to Account Director, become one of Capgemini’s top Automation experts on Expert Connect – and had two children.

I’m often asked how I juggle it all.

The answer? Flexibility. Capgemini allows me to fit my working hours around my childcare requirements and  work from home when I need to. The trust and flexibility afforded to me by the company has enabled me to  balance my work and home life – and in return, I feel an immense loyalty to the organisation. Bringing up children and progressing your career are not mutually exclusive: you can do both. Be open, honest and authentic about any challenges you face, seek flexibility in your working arrangements, work hard – and see the rewards.
