I have worked flexibly over the last 10 years as a sibling carer and now as a mother. After having my daughter in 2011, I decided to work in contract roles thinking that this was the only way I could achieve the flexibility that I needed.

In 2015, I realised that performing a series of contract roles meant that I really missed building long lasting relationships with team members and the businesses that I supported. I decided to look for a permanent role within a company that was results driven and therefore less likely to be opposed to agile ways of working.

I found a vacancy for a HR Manager position at Capgemini and this instantly grabbed my attention, as I was already aware of Capgemini’s reputation for treating its employees’ well. I applied for the role and I was contacted by a member of the Capgemini recruitment team who was incredibly professional and asked me questions specifically related to the role requirements.

During the interview process, I was transparent about the flexibility that I needed. In summary, I proposed that I could work my contractual hours in a different way and still do a great job.

Capgemini offered me the HR Manager position, I accepted and I have not looked back since. When I am at work I am able to focus and be at my best, knowing that my most precious is happy and that I am there for her when she needs me.

I feel incredibly loyal to Capgemini and feel really fortunate to work for a company that truly believes that working for them should be a ‘shared adventure’ for all.

Hi I’m Wayne and I work part-time for Capgemini as a Test Lead on a 4-day, Monday-Thursday pattern. Having been diagnosed with ME/CFS symptoms approximately 4 years ago (with some showing some 7 years prior to that) I decided to proactively change the way I live my life, by altering my work-life balance!

Suffice to say when it came to looking for a new challenge and employer, retaining my part-time status was something that was very high on my list of priorities, but I couldn’t believe how accommodating Capgemini were when I raised what I thought might be a very real sticking point in the recruitment process.

Not only was the request met with a ‘not a problem’ response (by more than one individual), I was also offered a number of different working hours options – but with absolutely no pressure to deviate from my original request.

As a part-time worker, my health has improved dramatically over the years and I enjoy life so much more… it gives me time to relax, time to do jobs around the house and when the kids are off school I get to spend more precious time with them.

Although part-time working is not without its challenges – mostly surrounding managing workload, time and/or the attitudes of those you’re working alongside or directly for – it is well worth the effort, and with support from your employer, makes for a happier and more effective employee in the long term.
